Casey in Labor
Casey in Labor

Casey finally delivered her baby.

Afraid and drenched in body fluids, Casey knocked on my door around 2am. Attempting not to panic or look worried, I woke Gretchen, and Cecelia. The three of us changed Casey’s clothes and put her into a clean bed. After reassuring Casey, everything would be fine; I woke Evan and JT and sent the boys on an errand to find the mid-wife. The boys returned in less than half an hour with a girl named Lizzy.

By mid-morning, Casey was in hard labor. Her screams of agony could be heard by everyone. I put on a happy face and reassured everyone; Casey and her baby would be fine. I kept the fears swirling around in my head to myself. I have seen tragedy. I know what could go wrong.

There were moments I feared Casey wouldn’t have the strength to push her baby into the world. With every contraction Lizzy, Gretchen and Cecelia would yell, “Push Casey… Push!”

At 3:07pm, this afternoon the baby arrived. After a few slaps on her little butt and a rough rub with a towel, the tiny infant let out a loud wonderful cry.

I’m exhausted, that was so incredibly stressful. The midwife was wonderful.

After things had calmed down, we elected Pete as the Sheriff of Bear Country. Pete has already been performing security duties. We simply made his position an official title. Bear Country High has grown tremendously over the last few years. We needed to start giving people assigned duties instead of asking for volunteers. Pete said he will be training a few people as his official deputies.
